    • An entry appeared for Sidney in the "Roll of Honour" column in The Faversham News (19 Oct 1918, p.4, col. 3):
      "Corpl. S R Fenn, M.G.C.
Bereavement has befallen Mr and Mrs
Robert Fenn, of 9, Orchard Place, who on
Saturday last had the distressing new that
their eldest son, Corpl. Sidney Robert Fenn,
of the Machine Gun Corps, had been killed in
France. Corpl. Fenn, a young man of ex-
cellent character, was prior to the war in the
service of the Hon H A Milles-Lade at Nash
Court. For some time after War broke out
he was engaged on munitions at the Cotton
Powder Works but eventually he voluntarily
offered himself for military service and en-
listed in the London Scottish. Subsequent-
ly he was transferred to the Machine Gun
Corpts and was drafted to Frances some 18
months ago. It was only last month that he
came home on his first leave from the front.
He returned on September 23rd, and had
been back in the line only just over a week
when he was killed by a piece of shrapnel -
the day before his 24th birthday. An officer
speaks very highly of him in a letter of sym-
pathy to the parents. He says : "Your son
was the best n.c.o. I had in the Section, and
also a splendid soldier generally. His chums
in the Section, and myself, keenly feel his
loss. Corpl. Fenn was killed on the 2nd
October after taking part in the advance of
28th Sept. There is some slight consolation
in the fact that he died instantly and suffer-
ed no pain whatever." Mr and Mrs Fenn have
another son, Harold (formerly at Messrs
Holmes and Sons'), in the Royal Air Force.
He has been serving for about three years."
