  • Name William Goatham WHITEHEAD
    Suffix [ONS gp] [G-K]
    Relationshipwith Teresa Ann GOATHAM
    Middle name relationship 1856
His mother's maiden name - after his grandfather William GOATHAM
    • The fact that the name William was combined with Goatham in his name suggest that William Goatham WHITEHEAD was named after his maternal grandfather, William GOATHAM. Whether his parents had any clue as to what was to come when they choose his name I don't know (I haven't bought his mother's death certificate to see what she died of, and so whether they might have known she didn't have long to live when her son was named). Whether or not it was predictable, William's mother died the year after his birth, and his care then appears to have passed to his maternal grandparents. Perhaps having his grandfather's name helped create a special bond between William and his grandparents. With twelve children, most of whom survived infancy, William's grandparents had over 70 grandchildren, and although some were not born until after they had died it would seem impossible to have had a close relationship with all of their grandchildren.
