In 1861 he was living with his second wife, 2 children and a step daughter with his parents in the village. Both he and his father were then grocers.

Like his parents William was a member of the Methodist Chapel, in his case for over 50 years. When he died the Gazette reported he had "an unswerving integrity" and was respected by the whole village. He was for many years superintendent of the Sunday School.
