      "Orphaned at 3 (Father fell from tug at Devonport dockyard and drowned). Sent to sea aboard a clipper - didn't like it so jumped ship in Australia and worked his passage back to UK - mother had remarried! Enlisted in army in 1920's and didn't like that either - discharged after 10 days! Managed Hallsands Hotel (owned by his stepfather). Subsequently bought dairy & grocers shop, Ford, Devonport. Conscripted into Royal Navy (HMS OPRA, Scotland) for the duration (of WW II)."
