Lily WOOLLEY
Set As Default Person -
Name Lily WOOLLEY Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born 10 Feb 1878 Milton next Sittingbourne, Kent, England
- Lily's marriage PR entry shows her father as Charles Woolley, a Boat Builder. This agrees with a baptism of a Lilly Adelaide WOOLLEY in 1878, suggesting it is correct, although I cannot find that her uncle and aunt had a brother Charles. (Of course, it is possible that the exact relationship was a little different - maybe she was a great niece, or a cousin's child.)
Her age in censuses suggest she was born in 1877 or 8, but I have not found a birth registration for her. No age is given in her baptism record, suggesting she was a baby.
Shown as aged 3, the 1891 census where shown as aged 13 and the 1901 census where shown as aged 12. Actual date from the death registration index. The 1939 registration shows born 10 Feb 1894, though as she married in 1898 this is clearly impossible!
Lily was with Rayfield and Harriet Goatham at the time of the 1891 census, shown as 'niece' (which is what makes her of interest to the Goatham One-Name Study). Despite being married she was also with them in 1901.
In 1881 she was shown as Lilian WOOLLEY, adopted. She was with Harriet King (i.e. Harriett Elizabeth KING née WOOLLEY, sister of the Henry Thomas WOOLLEY shown as her grandfather). Listed between Harriet and Lilian was Harriet's son-in-law and daughter, John James and Emily TANTON. Did the 'adopted' mean they were her adoptive parents? The ages of the parties involved would seem to make it more likely that John James and Emily were her adoptive parents.
As Emily seems to have been semi-adopted by Harriet's brother Henry, then she may have been like a sister to the younger Harriett Elizabeth WOOLLEY, who married Rayfield GOTHAM, and it makes sense that she should appear as their niece. However, Lilian was recorded as a WOOLLEY, so whoever had adopted Lilian it would seem she was already a relation, and so the 1891 description 'niece' may refer to the biological relationship.

GRO ref (birth): WOOLLEY, Lily q2 1880 Greenwich RD 1d 1090 - - with her parents in Greenwich in 1881, and still with them 1901
GRO ref (birth): Woolley, Lilly q1 1875 Tunbridge RD 2a 583 - she was with her Woolley parents in Tonbridge in 1881, 91 and 1901.
Baptised 30 Jul 1878 Holy Trinity Church, Milton next Sittingbourne, Kent, England
- From PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 23 Sep 2020)
"July 30th No. 1056. Lilly Adelaide B.B., parents: Charles & Adelaide Private surname: Woolley, abode: Milton, father's occupation: Shipwright, ceremony performed by: C. A. Seaton"
(I'm sure this is the baptism of the right Lily Woolley, as the name and occupation of her father matches that shown in her marriage record)
Gender Female Go(a)tham ONS On tree because ... - Two Woolley siblings, probably an aunt and uncle of Lily, married Goathams. Lily was living with Rayfield and Harriet Goatham at the time of the 1891 census, shown as 'niece'. Despite being married she was also with them in 1901.

Father Charles WOOLLEY, d. Yes, date unknown Mother Adelaide, d. Yes, date unknown Married - I'm not sure if Charles and Adelaide married; their daughter Lily's baptism records notes 'B.B.' which I think means 'base born', a common note but not when two parents are named with the same surname. It could mean they had married between Lily's birth and baptism, but I haven't identified a likely marriage of a Charles to an Adelaide or '* Adelaide' (i.e. someone with Adelaide as a middle name), before or after Lily's birth.

, d. Jun Q 1946, Woolwich Reg Dist, Kent or London, England
(Age 73 years) Married 17 May 1898 Holy Trinity Church, Maidstone, Kent, England

Details from PR (image on FMP, viewed 23 Sep 2020)Strangely, the 1911 census shows that Robert and Lily had had two children by then, although they had two with them and Lily had another with her in 1901.
The latter, a son Albert, was born the quarter after the wedding - was he the son of Lily but not Robert, or was '2' simply an error?
The family were in Gillingham in 1911, but as I can't find them in Kent in 1939 or Robert and Lily's death prior to that I thought they might be the Robert and Lily who died in Woolwich / Greenwich.
Seeing the 1939 registration image together with looking for more children seems to confirm that this is the couple who subsequently lived in Woolwich, despite a couple of date differences in the 1939 register or the index. It is clear the Robert E shown as born 1874 was actually born 1914, and Lily's year is clearly wrong in the register - the date and month match the dob in the death registration index exactly, though the year doesn't.
