Tithe Apportionments 1841  Charleton, Devon, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    • John Smith and Nathaniel Smith are shown as occupiers of 86.3.00 acres, West Charleton Farm, and also 38.2.12 acres, Home Farm, both belonging to Lord Ashburton.
Occupation From 1841 to 1861  Charleton, Devon, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    Farmer's brother
    • Described as 'Farmer's brother' in 1851 when his brother John was shown as farming 40 acres, employing 2 labourers. Nathaniel, like John was unmarried, and living with John.
This is far less than when the tithe apportionment data was drawn up for Charleton in 1839.
By 1851 Nathaniel was aged 60 and John was in his 70s, so they may well have decided to semi-retire and hence given up the large West Charleton Farm.
By 1861 John was dead and Nathaniel in charge; the 38 acres he is shown on the census as farming matches the acreage of Home Farm shown in the tithe apportionment.
Residence From 1851 to 1861  East Charleton Village, Charleton, Devon, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    • Three unmarried siblings John, Nathaniel and Sarah Smith were living in East Charleton in 1851 with their niece Grace and 2 servants, both male, presumably the 2 labourers John was described as employing on the 40 acres he was farming with his brother Nathaniel.
      Sarah was housekeeper.
In 1861 there were still 3 siblings, but John had died and Alexander had now joined them. Grace was still present, like Sarah shown as House keeper. A 19 year old servant was also living with them, carter Samuel Stone.
Probate 26 Apr 1868  Exeter, Devon, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    Calendar entry
    • Smith Nathaniel.
      26 May. The Will
Nathaniel Smith late of Lower Polston in the
Parish of Halwell in the County of Devon
Yeoman deceased who died 8 May 1868 at
Lower Polston aforesaid was proved at
Exeter by the oath of Grace Smith of Lower
Polston aforesaid Spinster the Niece the sole
      Executrix.
      Effects under £200.
Died 8 May 1868  Lower Polston, Halwell, Devon, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    • Haven't found Nathaniel's death in GRO index. A Nathaniel aged 74 died in Totnes RD in 1868, age close but this fits better a diff Nathaniel who in the census is shown in Dartington (i.e. in Totnes RD)

Place from Probate calendar entry. I believe that that is for this Nathaniel as probate was granted to Grace Smith, spinster niece. Not only was a spinster niece with this name housekeeper to Nathaniel and his brothers in Charleton, but she was living in Polston at the time of the 1871 census (birthplace of Charleton and age point to the right Grace).
