Gender Male Buried 28 Sep 1836 St. James’ Church, Slapton, Devon, England

Shows William FOGWILL, aged 89
Notes - The Fogwills do not seem to have been in Slapton before William and Mary arrived, having children baptised there 1785 - 1802. The last of these suggest Mary was at least a little younger than William, but even so she could well have been aged about 30 by the time of the first Slapton baptism. This means William and Mary could well have had children before they moved to Slapton. I believe I have found their marriage in West Alvington in 1782 - so there could easily have been one or 2 children prior to the Slapton ones.
All Fogwill BMD events that I am aware of in Slapton can be linked to William and Mary and their descendants aparts from two: the marriage of a Susanna to Richard EDWARDS in 1803 and the birth of their son Richard Edwards FOGWILL the previous year.
I strongly suspect that Susanna was a daughter of William, born before he arrived in Slapton; hence I have linked her to him on this tree. The age given for her in the censuses makes her too old to be the daughter of Mary, but I think the marriage in Stokenham in 1776 was this William, just right for William and his first wife to be Susanna's parents.
But whilst it seems too much of a coincidence to suppose that Susanna arrived in Slapton about the same time by chance, there is of course the possibility that she was e.g. an orphaned niece whose care fell to William and Mary.

Family 2 Mary ELWORTHY, bap. 2 May 1763, All Saints’ Church, West Alvington, Devon, England
, d. Sep Q 1838, Kingsbridge Reg Dist, Devon, England
(Age ~ 74 years) Married 11 Jun 1782 All Saints’ Church, West Alvington, Devon, England
- The DFHS CD for Woodleigh Deanery (covering marriages for most parishes from 1754-1837, bapt 1813-1839 and bur 1813-1837/8) has only two (F/V)ogw(e/i)ll events which are not in Slapton: both are marriages of a William; I suspect both are this William. They are both well away from other areas where there were quite a few Vogwells etc.
The age at the burial of William suggests he was some years older than his wife (else she would have been about 55 when her last child was born, assuming it was baptised soon after birth!) That suggests he might have been a widow remarrying.
The CD shows that there is more info for this marriage entry in the PR.
DFHS entry shows FOGWELL, William marr Elworthy, Mary; notes in PR.
