Shows Ashley Thomas, son of George and Rose Hannah King Lade GOATHAM, father a Carpenter
Gender Male Education 1861 Scholar Emigrated - Although Ashley went abroad and died in active service in the army, and I would not normally classify such moves as emigration, the fact he married and left a family in South Africa means I do consider him as an emigrant.
Military Service From 1871 to 1879 Warwickshire Regiment - Zulu Wars - Ashley appears to have joined or at least been in the army by 1871 (documents to be seen).
There is a chaper about Ashley in a book about Bredgar (this chaper alone seems to be online).
On the 130th anniversary of his death the primary school in Bredgar dedicated a day to his memory.
An article with picture of the memorial in South Africa.
Item on the Royal Regiment of Wales website about the restoration of the monument in Bredgar: http://www.rrw.org.uk/news/index.htm (June 2004)
mentions his g'father in letter to his father in Feb 1878
Died 22 Jan 1879 Battle Of Isandula, South Africa - From Memorial in Bredgar Churchyard
Memorial Aft 22 Jan 1879 St. John the Baptist Church, Bredgar, Kent, England Petty sessions - From Ashley refering to Trollope's book about South Africa when writing to his family in England I imagined him as a bookish boy, but I guess he had to have had a sense of adventure and perhaps been a bit pugilistic to join the army, as the following account of an altercation suggests. And it shows that the problem of boys and knives is nothing new!
(Ashley would have been 13 at the time. There were two Michael Goatham's who could have been the plaintiff - one was aged about 26, the other about 34).
Siblings
2 brothers and 2 sisters Patriarch & Matriarch Notes - (Christian names in births index are Thomas Ashley)
