      Although Mary subsequently married Thomas Acres, for whom she began housekeeper sometime between 1861 and 1871, he was evidently not accepting the need to support her two living children in 1868, or she feared he might not continue to do so, as she applied for a bastardy order:
      "... sessions on Thursday last, before the Mayor, G. Hughes and B. iluzoli [tbc], Esqrs., the only case being an application by Mary Goatham for orders in bastardy against Thomas Acres, of Upper Deal, who she alleged was the father of her two illegitimate children ..."

      The births of all Mary's six children, and the deaths of those who died in infancy, were all registered as Goatham. The only two to survive infancy subsequently appear to have used Acres consistently - when with their mother, and possible father, in 1881, and in the 1891 and 1901 censues, after which in 1906 Harry died and Bessie married.
