Name Charles WHITEHEAD Relationship with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Abt 1832 Stockbury, Kent, England - When Charles was baptised he was shown as the base born son of a servant Ann Whitehead. But which Ann? Two possibilities would seem to be Ann the daughter of Richard and Mary, baptised 1793, aged about 39, or Ann, the daughter of Richard and Mary's son Edward, aged about 20. From age alone the latter would seem the more likely. However, the 1851 census appears to answer this: he was the nephew of Edward and so the son of the older Ann. There is a slight problem here in that nephew was sometimes used in the past to refer to any young male relation, though I think this had stopped by 1832. It was also known for people to be less than honest about a relationship, but usually this meant passing off an illegitimate grandchild as their own child. More evidence may be found in the 1861 census. By this time Charles had been married, had a son and lost his wife. The son was with his maternal grandfather in 1861, while Charles, presumably unable to look after his son due to work, was a boarder with Edward Waite and his family in Maidstone. Looking at Edward's family it was clear that his wife Ann was the daughter of Edward Whitehead, to whom Charles was 'nephew'. Was he with his cousin or his mother? If Ann was his mother, wouldn't it be more likely Charles would have been shown as son or son-in-law rather than boarder? And isn't it also more likely that this son would have been with him and being looked after by the child's grandmother? I think it is, and so while clearly this is not firm evidence either way, I think this census supports Charles being the son of the older Ann, sister of Edward.

Catharine ("Kitty") CLARK, b. Abt 1785, d. Aug 1857, (probably), Loose, Kent, England (Age ~ 72 years) (Grandmother)Notes - With Edward and Catharine in 1851, shown as Edward's nephew, hence I believed he was the son of Edward's sister Ann (his baptism shows he was the son of an unmarried Ann). However, that Ann appears to have married in 1812, and so I now think Charles was probably the son of Edward's daughter Ann.
