Minnie HYDE
Set As Default Person -
Name Minnie HYDE Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Jun Q 1875 Margate, Kent, England
- GRO ref: Hyde, Minnie q2 1875 Thanet RD 2a 809; GRO online index shows mother's maiden name as Hurst
Baptised 20 Jul 1876 St. John the Baptist Church, Margate, Kent, England
- From PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 15 Jan 2021)
Gender Female Education 1881 Scholar Occupation 1901 Margate, Kent, England
Laundress - Shown as "at home" rather than "worker" so presumably took clothes etc. into her own home to wash.
Residence 1911 The Rose and Crown, Howland Road, Marden, Kent, England
- Minnie was not only at the pub, her occupation was shown as 'Partener' to the publican, 66 year old Joseph Lee.
Her relationship to Joseph was left blank by Joseph, but entered as 'Boarder' by the enumerator.
That she should have been a business partner in running the pub seems unlikely, and census entries sometimes a woman's occupation as wife - was partner meant in this way, helping Joseph with the business, but since they were not married she was described as 'partner'? 'Housekeeper', 'barmaid' or 'general duties' would have seemed more likely descriptions in this case.
Shown as Minnie Baker, widow, aged 33, born Margate.
Her surname had first been entered as Hyde before being crossed out and entered as Hyde; this along with the birthplace and the age which although not right was close (she would have been 34 at the time).
Died Aft 1934 - Mother's obit shows 7 daughters still living
Siblings3 brothers, 7 sisters and 1 person of an unknown gender Patriarch & Matriarch
Notes - With parents (1891c) - no occ; next door with sister Maria in 1901c.
I think marriage is probably this Minnie - the only one I can find bmd or most census entries for but in 1901 another Minnie Hyde is shown as sister of Caroline Hughes nee Hyde. Was this a mistake (e.g. misreading of Annie)

Miscellaneous 1860 Margate, Kent, England
An unhappy marriage? - From 'The Kentish Gazette', 3 April 1860:
In the section "Margate Police Court."
Wednesday.-(Before the Rev. G. W. Sicklemore; and T. Blackburn, G. E. Hannam, G. Y. Hunter, and Dr. Price, Esqrs.)
John Hyde appeared in answer to a summons charged with assaulting Mary Ann, his wife, on the 25th ult.-Mr. Towne appeared for the complainant, who stated that she was the wife of the defendant. She had been married to him about 17 months, and was confined about a month ago, but the child was since dead. On Sunday last he gave her a violent blow with his fist on the head, and he had several times before struck her, though she had never provoked him to her knowledge. When the child was born it was covered with bruises, and the only reason the defendant assigned for his illusage was that she had pawned things out of the house unknown to him, but she had not done so. He began to show his "airs" three days after they were married, and she was in fear of him from his threats; and if he was was not bound over she was afraid he would do her some bodily harm. He had locked her out and would not allow her to come in, nor allow her anything.-Defendant denied ever having struck his wife but said she had threatened to jump down the well. He thought the rent was paid, but instead of that there was £1 1s. 4d. due, and she had spent the money upon rum and pawned his watch unknown to him.-The mother of the complainant said she had frequently heard the defendant say he would have her life, and that she had seen nothing wrong on the part of her daughter since she had been married.-Held to bail, himself in £10, and two sureties in £5 each, to keep the peace for three months.
