    Settlement examination
    • A settlement examination of George and Anne when they were living in Bapchild in 1762 establised that they were settled in Stone.
From entry in the Lathe of Scray petty sessions records it appears that no copy of the full examination survives.
The examination would have looked at what could have changed George's place of settlement from that inherited from his father - whether he was an apprentice (and completed the apprenticeship), whether he had been employed for at least a year by an employer, etc.. This may well have made it clear which George was the one who married Ann. The petty sessions will have recorded a summary; if we are lucky this may still contain sufficient. E.g. if he did serve an apprenticeship he would have only been likely to have completed this about a year before the examination if the George baptised 1740, but 7 years before if the one baptised in 1734.

    • There was also a George Goatham bur in Tonge on 5 May 1784; the other burial is almost certainly this George's son. But which is which? Probably no way of knowing.

    Notes
    • The George who married Ann Winch was "of Bapchild, bach" at time of marriage
    • (Research):There seem to have been 2 Georges born in Whitstable around 1740 either of whom could be my ancestor George (date of birth unknown, but he married in 1761). There were actually 4 Georges baptised in Whitstable between 1733 and 1741, but 2 appear to have died in infancy.
Thus the 2 Whitstable candidates are:
      1. the younger George, son of Michael and Elizabeth nee Dunkin, grandson of George Goatham and Ame nee Rickson, baptised 1740,
      2. George son of George and Jane née Stanes, grandson of Richard Goatham and Mary nee Cok, baptised 1734.
The 2 candidates shared Goatham great grandparents: George Goatham and Mildred (maiden name unknown)

Of course my ancestor George (this one) could have been another George entirely, but Michael was a fairly unusual name at that time, and both the Whitstable potential fathers of this George named their 1st son Michael - as did this George (marr 1761), so I'm pretty confident they must at least be close relations to this George.

It seems more common for a man to name his first son after himself or his father than after a brother or grandfather, etc. so it seems more likely that Michael was the father of this George but this is hardly enough evidence to rule George out as the father.

Twenty seven had been a more typical age to marry, favouring the one baptised in 1734, but the Ann Winch that this George married was almost certainly born about 1742 (from age recorded at burial and the date of the baptism of the only likely Ann); a groom being just a couple of years older than his bride was the average age difference and that favours the one I show here, baptised 1740!
