Residence 1851 Davington, Kent, England - living at Davington Priory with his wife and daughter Sophia
Water Lane, Public Hse, (1861)
Residence 1861 Public House, Water Lane, Faversham, Kent, England Occupation 1861 Gardener and bricklayer Occupation From 1869 to 1871 Chimney sweep - Shown as 'Chimney Sweeper' when his daughters married in 1870, as a 'chimney sweep's master employing 1 man' in the 1871 census, where that employee was 23 year old Joseph Partridge from West Bromwich.
In on Sat 17 April, 1869 a short article appeared in The Faversham Mercury (p.2, col. 6) entitled 'Quarrelsome Chimneysweepers'; I'm sure the Mr. Goatham in whose employ they were was Michael Goatham, since I have found no other whose occupation was as a chimney sweep.
"Borough Police Court.
...
Yesterday.
(Before the Mayor and C. Bryant, Esq.)
Quarrelsome Chimneysweepers. - Joseph Partridge and Michael O'Hara, two chimneysweepers in the employ of Mr. Goatham, were charged under the Bye Laws with fighting in the public streets on the previous day. P. C. Adey stated that at about 2 o'clock on Thursday afternoon he found the prisoners fighting in West-street. They were both on the ground when he went up, and their soot-bag and machine were lying in the road. He took the prisoners into custody. - Mr. Goatham attended, and from a statement which he made it appeared that the quarrel arose over some work the prisoners were engaged in. He gave them both good characters, and the Bench fined them each 1s. and 7s. costs. Goatham paid the money."
Residence From 1871 52, Tanner Street, Faversham, Kent, England - In the 1871 census with his wife and son and a servant (not domestic - Michael's employee for his work, a chimney sweeper's man) shown as the household, and two separate 'households' in the same house a lodger, and his daughter Elizabeth with her baby - Elizabeth shown as wife, implying her husband lived there. Being a shipwright, a job which could entail travelling on a ship, he was probably at work. Being with a young baby and her husband away it must have been helpful to be in the same house as her parents.
After his daughter Sophia died

"Goatham. - Feb. 15th, at 81, Summer-road, Croydon, Michael Goatham, aged 76 years."
Buried 23 Feb 1891 West Norwood Cemetery, Norwood Road, Lambeth, London, England - The burial register shows Michael as aged 76 years, and as of 41 Sumner Road, West Croydon.
Seems a little surprising the burial was in Norwood - it was about 4 miles from the Sumner Road address, while Croydon Cemetery was much closer.
But his grandson, Charles Henry Richmond had been buried there in 1877; maybe the burial was in the same grave. Or, with his daughter Elizabeth and her family living in Norwood Road, maybe Michael and Mercy were at Elizabeth's home and not their own when Michael died.
