Shows Jessie Ellen BROWNE married Arthur Frederick GOATHAM

The wedding was reported on in the (New Zealand, Wellington region) Evening Post of 13 April 1929 (Volume CVII, Issue 85, p. 13) so I guess the wedding was that month, though the report just describes it as "recent".

      Weddings
A recent wedding solemnised at the Thorndon Methodist Church was that of Jessie Ellen, elder daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Browne, Raroa road, Kelburn, and Arthur Frederick, younger son of Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Goatham, Oban street, Highland Park. The bride, who was escorted by her father, wore a simple frock of white georgette and silver lace, with a touch of pink at the waist. Her long tulle veil formed the train, being held in place by a wreath of orange blossoms. She also carried a beautiful shower bouquet of roses, sweet sultans, and maidenhair fern. Her bridesmaids were Misses Rizpah Browne (chief) and Dulcio Browne, who were dressed alike in frocks of blue shot taffetas, with silver and pearl headbands, their bouquets being of mauve and pink to tone with their frocks. Mr. W. F. Browne, junr., was best man and Mr. E. Gregory groomsman. Miss Worboys presided at the organ, and the service was fully choral, the bride having been organist of the church for tho past three years and the bridegroom also having been a member of the choir. Tho church had been decorated by friends of the bride and bridegroom, the decorations including a beautiful bell, under which they stood during the ceremony. As the bride left tho church she was presented with a silver key by little Edna Goatham to mark her coming of age. The reception which followed was attended by about 120 guests, and was most enjoyable, the occasion being the more interesting as it also marked the silver wedding of the bride's parents. Later the bride and bridegroom left by car for the North, the bride wearing a brown charmalino frock, trimmed with fawn, and a brown and fawn felt hat. [1]

    Married Aft 1958
    • Date applies if I am right about Evelyn marrying Arthur or Victor Goatham.

On 3 Feb 1995 one Evelyn Nancy Goatham died and was buried in Karori Crematorium. Aged 84, she was born c. 1910. Since no birth has been found of a Goatham with this name (in New Zealand, Australia or England) I think she was probably a Goatham by marriage. The NZ marriage index only shows marriages over 80 years ago which probably explains why I haven't found a marriage of a Goatham to an Evelyn Nancy.
Karori was where the family of Frederick William Goatham were buried.
Both of his sons, Arthur Frederick Goatham and his brother Victor were left widowers relatively young - aged 56 and 60 respectively. I suspect that Evelyn was the second wife of one of them, it could easily have been either but Arthur being widowered younger and being closer in age to Evelyn would seem the most likely candidate.

The electoral rolls seem to confirm this, Evelyn is to be found living in the same house as Arthur: far more likely that they should be husband and wife than brother and sister-in-law.
