Elizabeth MEW
Set As Default Person -
Name Elizabeth MEW Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Abt 1862 Headcorn, Kent, England
- From the 1871 census, where shown as aged 9, the 1881 census where shown as aged 19, and the 1891 census where shown as aged 28.
Shown as born Headcorn in 1871 and 1881, Threadcorn in 1891. No such place as Threadcorn, presumably a mis-reading by the ennumerator of Headcorn.
Shown as born 5 Aug 1859 in the 1939 register.
Recorded as Elizabeth in all censuses from 1881 to 1921, she was recorded with her sister's name of Eliza in the 1939, and had increated her age to that of her sister as well. Had she adopted her sister's identity for pension or similar purposes? (she may have needed to show a marriage certificate, and it was her sister Eliza who had married William, not Elizabeth)

Other Partners: Eliza MEW m. 18 Dec 1875Married Aft 1881 - William and Elizabeth could not have legally married, since a man could not married his deceased wife's sister.
In 1881 Elizabeth is with William and his young daughter, shown as sister-in-law and as housekeeper.
By 1891 Elizabeth was living as William's wife, although there seems to be no marriage registration, and there were more children - presumably children of both Elizabeth and William.
The 1911 census shows that William had had 12 children, of whom 2 had died, while Elizabeth had had 10, of whom 2 had died, so it appears that there was one who I have not found.
Married? Not married or evidence to suggest they didn't marry
