Landing boy (below ground) - Landing boy (or landing lad) on the 1911 census and at the time of his death later that year.
As a landing boy George was responsbile for dividing up the main sets of tubs that travelled on rails through the mines into smaller sets at the main landing of a district. He then had to despatch them into the various branch landings. Before doing so he had to put the 10 feet length of coupling chain into the first tub of the set.
On the occasion of his death he told another boy to rap the set "away" before he had put the chain into the tub. He was putting the chain in when the set moved away, with the result that his head was crushed between the top of the tub and a baulk.
A page commemorating George Frederick can be found on the Durham Mining Museum website.
