Gender Male Emigrated 1927 Southampton, Hampshire, England From / Departure on “Lancastria” - Sailed on the Cunard ship "Lancastria". Lancastria was first named Tyrrhenia, and her maiden voyage was from Glasgow to Montreal in 1922. Refitted and renamed in 1924, she sailed scheduled routes from Liverpool to New York until 1932. It would have been on one of these regular trips that Henry crossed the ocean to his new life. From 1932 she was used as a cruise liner before meeting a tragic end in WW2, sinking on 17 June 1940 off the French port of St. Nazaire while evacuating British nationals and troops from France. She received 3 direct hits when German bombers attacked and sank within 20 minutes; the resulting loss of an estimated 4,000 or more lives is the worst single loss of life in British maritime history.

Military Service to 1947 England Corporal in Canadian Army Tank Corp - He was serving in England at the time of his mother's death, though his obituary shows him as having been in the army in WWII; presumably he was awaiting discharge in 1946.
The Vancouver Sun of 21 Jan 1947 records the arrival in Halifax [Canada] of some British Columbia army personnel and 72 of their dependents (44 wives and 28 children), who were then travelling home. Those listed include 'Cpl. H. Goatham, 130 East Third'. As Harry was not then married he had no dependents there to meet him.

Sarah being illegitimate her mother's name was entered as her father, though no occupation was given.
Witnesses were Alice Ann Clifford, Edward Millington and Minnie Millington, the last two being half siblings of the bride.
The 1911 census shows that Walter and Sarah had had 6 children, all still living then - and with them at the time of the census.

A tree on FamilySearch (full of errors) shows the Harry who married in 1946 as this one. Whilst it might seem unlikely given his emigration in 1927, I don't know of another Henry / Harry to fit AND a Goatham was born in Canada in 1948 so it seems that tree is correct.
