Father John GOATHAM, bap. 16 Apr 1693, St. Laurence’s Church, St. Lawrence in Thanet, Kent, England
, d. Bef 1770 (Age ~ 76 years) Mother Anne DIGGES, bap. 14 Apr 1700, St. John the Baptist Church, Margate, Kent, England
, d. Oct 1770, Margate, Kent, England
(Age ~ 70 years) Married 25 Feb 1723/24 St. Benet’s Church, Paul's Wharf, City of London, London, England
- Register entry "John Goatham of Ramsgate Kent B and Ann Digges of Margate Kent S by LC" - no indication of why the marriage was taking place in London.
With John being of Ramsgate, and Ann of Margate, it is not clear why they married in London. According to the website of St. Benet's "Until 1867 St Benet was the parish church of Doctors Commons, a legal institution which, among its other activities, could provide facilities for hasty marriages. There is a record, for instance, of some 1300 weddings taking place in one year alone in the Eighteenth Century." But it is not clear why they would have wanted a hasty marriage. Was Anne underage or one (or both) marrying against their father's will? Or was it just a romantic thing to do, to travel (presumably around the coast and up the Thames) to London?

Family John FOSTER, b. Est 1731, d. Yes, date unknown Marriage License 29 Jan 1765 Surrey, England
- Both of Rotherhithe
(from Origins.net, from Surrey Marriage Index 1500 to 1846)
Married 30 Jan 1765 St. Mary’s Church, Rotherhithe, Surrey, England
- As a number of Judith's close family married in London, and as I've not come across any other Judith Goathams I am fairly sure this is the marrige of the Judith as shown here..
There were 2 different John and Judith Fosters married only 7 years and about 4 miles apart.
A John and Judith Foster had children baptised at St. Matthew's Church, Bethnal Green (1773-1794); John Foster and Judith née Goatham are not the parents. The spacing and fact they were all at the same church suggest this is one family; they fit as children of a John Foster who married 'Juda Lebeau' at St. Matthew's in 1772. The marriage entry shows that the John who married in 1772 was a bachelor, so it appears not to be the same John remarrying. A Judith Foster died in Bethnal Green RD in 1838, age given as 86 in death registration online index, i.e. probably born 1751, probably Judith née Lebeau, not Judith née Goatham.
Unfortunately I have yet to discover what became of the couple I am interested in!
Judith's brother Robert left money to his niece "Elizabeth Soper" - did Judith have a daughter who married a Soper? Did Judith remarry to a Soper and then have a daughter Elizabeth?
