Matthew RUDGARD
Set As Default Person -
Name Matthew RUDGARD Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born 18 Mar 1871 Lincoln, Lincolnshire, England
- Actual date from the 1939 register, place from the 1911 census
Matthew was a son of Ruth WIlloughby, shown as unmarried but with 8 children aged 1 month (Matthew) to 17 at the time of the 1871 census.
On 4 Jul 1872 Ruth married Edward William Rudgard Rudgard (at St. Swithin's Church, Lincoln), and hence forth all Ruth's children appear in censuses as Rudgards, and with Edward as their father, including after Edward's death in 1898. Whether he was the father of any or all I don't know.
Baptised 1 Feb 1872 St. Swithin's Church, Lincoln, Lincolnshire, England

Gender Male Occupation 1891 Cambridgeshire, England
Brewer - The family were living in what was part of Bassingbourne Civil Parish, in Royston Ecclesiastical Parish; Matthew was probably working in Bassingbourne or Royston.
Matthew's father and brother George were in the same household and also working as brewers.
Occupation From 1897 to 1911 Faversham, Kent, England
Brewer - At the time of his marriage, when his children baptised and in the 1901 and 1911 censuses. Later (1946, when granted probate for his wife) described as a 'retired brewer' so he presumably continued as a brewer until sometime between 1911 and 1939.
Described in the latter as 'Operative Brewer & Maltster'.
Both his marriage PR entry and the censuses show that his father was also a brewer, although the 1881 census records he was not a master [brewer].
Retired Bef 1939 - Shown as retired in the 1939 register, and as a retired brewer when granted probate for his wife.

Both signed, witnesses Walter Wheeler Berry and Emily J White, both also signed.
The 1911 census shows that Matthew and Elizabeth had had 4 children, all still living. Searching the birth registration index (on FreeBMD) for Rudgards with a mother's maiden name of Berry suggests there were no more born after the census.
