  • Name Andrew GOTHAM
    Suffix [ONS gp] [Parents?]
    Relationshipwith Teresa Ann GOATHAM
    Born Abt 1648
    • About 1668 from age given as 43 in marriage licence allegation (transcription).
      I estimated 1663 from date of marriage, men marrying for the first time on average aged about 28, adjusted to 1660 * IF * he was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth.

      This is quite a speculative link. It is based on:
      - the liklihood that Thomas would have named a son Andrew;
      - this (London) Andrew probably being about the right age to be a son of Thomas;
      - both Thomas and this Andrew dealing in cloth.
      - from a Chancery Court case (TNA ref: C 10/496/3, 1681) it is clear that Thomas was dealing with London merchants. It is therefore quite feasible that it would seem a good idea for one of his sons to go to London as a cloth merchant.

      Andrew was not a rare name, but neither was it one of the most commonly used. There were clearly several earlier amongst the Devon Gothams. This means I think Andrew probably was from the Devon rather than the Kent or other Gothams, but because there is a reference to one in 1540 then clearly there was the possibility of another line using this family name.

      If I thought I would be likey to find more evidence I would wait until I had it, but it seems to me unlikely that I will.
      - neither PRs nor BTs survive that are likely to contain the baptism of a son of Thomas born at this time;
      - although Thomas left a will that was lost in 1942, and there is no known copy.

      It therefore seems sensible to add Andrew as a son so what I think is a probable link can readily be seen, but it should be noted that I could easily be wrong.

    Notes
    • (Research):Have I fused two Andrews?
      It looks like I might have fused two Andrews, although I think he could well have had two occupations.
      They are more similar than they may at first appear. A merchant tailor was a merchant trading in cloth, not making garments. A victualler could have been provisioning, e.g. supplying the food etc. that a ship needed before sailing, not running a pub or eating establishment.
      (Also, I am not sure if he would have been described like this if he was dead? - I think quite likely he would).
      I think the possibility remains that I have fused two, but probably the events I have attached to this Andrew did all apply to the same Andrew.

    • Date estimated from the dob suggested by marriage licence allegation for the Andrew Gotham I am guessing was his son.
      My estimates of dates of birth of the daughters I guess to be children of this marriage (* which marriage may not have even taken place! *) are a little later, in the 1650s, so they do not require an earlier date.
      An Elizabeth Gotham was buried in East Ogwell on 2 Sep 1663, I suspect this was Thomas' 1st wife. A remarriage just a few months later was common, especially where a man had young children needing mothering.

      A Humphrey was buried about 2 months before Elizabeth who I guess may have been a son of Thomas and Elizabeth; I know of no Humphrey for whom I do not have a burial.

      However, this does present another possibility: was this Thomas the son not of Andrew but of Humphrey? Since there is no Humphrey signing the protestation oath I think it unlikely.

      There were also burials of Thomases in East Ogwell in 1700 and 1709, neither shown as 'son of' though other children were at this time. I guess that one was the Thomas in this marriage, but who was the other?
      There may well have been a child of this marriage named Thomas (or of Thomas's marriage to Mary Goswill - there are no BTs or PRs for years incl. 1668 and 1670).
