  	From age in 1841 census given as 3 GRO ref: GOTHAM, Thomas q3 1837 Stoke upon Trent RD 17 120; GRO online index shows mother's maiden name as Richardson Having some weeks in which to register a birth, births registered one quarter often occurred in the previous quarter. However, births were only registered from 1 July 1837, so Thomas must have been born between then and 30 September, actually in quarter 3. The actual date and place from the GRO register entry. Bird Cage Walk is where his maternal grandparents were living at the time of the 1841 census, so possibly early in their marriage Sarah and Matthew Gotham lived with them.

  	A passenger list which names his mother shows her as with two children. I'm sure this would be Thomas and his sister Sarah Ann; the only other child I believe she had had by then was

  Being 22 on 1st June 1860 is probably a perfect fit with this Thomas, as his birth registration in qtr 3 1837 suggests he was born this qtr, as registration only started for events from 1st July that year. In addition to being a good fit to this Thomas, I am not aware of any other Thomas who this could be. Although there were others of a similar age (one born 1834, another 1838) there is good evidence for them in Australia and England respectively. In addition, this Thomas was definitely in the USA in 1892 when he married there. The US 1860 census has a 22 year old Thomas with a 19 year old Martha Gotham in St. Louis, Missouri. Thomas is working as a blacksmith. Both are shown as born England. It seems probable they were husband and wife.

  In the 1880 US census there is a 40 year old English born (of English parents) Thomas Gotham, a steam boat engineer living in Bismarck, North Dakota. This is almost 1000 miles from St. Louis, but it seems to me likely it was the same Thomas, although he was shown as single. (Maybe Martha was a sister, or maybe whoever provided the information in 1880 did not realise Thomas had been married). If the steam-boat engineer was this Thomas, he would seem to have returned to St. Louis by 1894, when invovled in a court case there.

  	The Missouri Judicial Index for 1804-1901 shows that Thomas was involved in a court case (no. 20750). (I have not yet attempted to find out about this case, other than look for Thomas Gotham in the search of US newspapers on FMP, on 21 July 2017 - this did not produce any relevant results).

  	I can't be sure that Thomas and Martha were husband and wife, as the census does not show relationships, but as Thomas does not seem to have had a sister Martha and I have not discovered an English-born Martha Gotham who this could be it seems probable that Martha was Thomas's wife. However, if I am right about his entry in the 1880 census he was then described as 'single'.
