Maria TOZER
Set As Default Person -
Name Maria TOZER Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Baptised 21 Jul 1778 St. Peter and St. Paul’s Church, Broadhempston, Devon, England
- From PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 3 Dec 2014)
Gender Female Residence 1852 Plymouth, Devon, England
- At the time Maria wrote her will
Will 7 Feb 1852 Written - Have copy, to be transcribed and added.
First written on 7 Feb 1852, Maria added several codicils and memoranda between then and November 1853.
With Gotham half siblings I hoped Maria's will might make mention of them or their descendants but at a quick look through I don't think it does. The closest appears to be a reference to Ann Pinson GOTHAM's husband George BOWEN, although I have not yet checked that the reference is to this George BOWEN.
Died Mar Q 1855 Plymouth Reg Dist, Devon, England
- GRO ref: Hoyles, Maria q1 1855 Plymouth RD 5b 224; GRO online index shows age at death as 77
Probate 25 May 1855 Prerogative Court of Canterbury, London, England
Granted Buried - In her will requested burial in the vault at St. Saviour's Dartmouth with her husband, but no entry so far found in the burial registers there (looked at index of registers, not browsed them)

- From BT (image on FamilySearch, viewed 25 Jan 2021)
"June the 4th. John Tozer of Broadhempston, Yeoman was marryed to Elizabeth Gotham (both on widowhood) with Licence"
(the Hardwicke register for Ipplepen for marriages 1754-1813 appears not to have survived)
When John and Elizabeth married I think John had 6 children from his first marriage living, and Elizabeth 4 from hers; all 10 were probably living at home with them. They then went on to have another 6 together, although the final two, twins, both died shortly after birth, both being buried just six days afther they were baptised.
With her six step-children aged between just two and 15 Elizabeth no doubt played a mothering role to the younger children at least.
John was step-father to children aged five to 15, but may not have felt much affection for them. He did not leave a bequest to a single one of them. However, although his will was long it was a practical will, leaving generally large bequests, not small token ones to mark friendships, etc. and he may have been content, therefore, that their mother would take care of his step-children rather than not caring about them. One, Ann, pre-deceased John, dying as a childless widow, while the state of his two step-sons is at the time of writing (May 2022) unknown to me, but his other step-daughter, Elizabeth, definitely survived him.
