George THOMAS
Set As Default Person -
Name George THOMAS Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Gender Male Residence 1829 Plymouth, Devon, England
- Shown as 'of Plymouth' on marriage licence
Occupation From 1829 to 1832 Mariner - Recorded as such on his marriage licence and when his son George was baptised.
Marriage 17 Dec 1837 St. Gregory the Great’s Church, Dawlish, Devon, England
Witness - marriage of sister in law Mary Ann GOTHAM - I am assuming the George who witnessed the marriage was this one
If so, where was he in 1841? - there is no sign of a death registration between 1837 and 1841 that could be his, but of course he could have died at sea. However, since he was a mariner I suspect he was at sea, alive, at the time of the census.

Family 1 Sophia HEATH, bap. 15 Apr 1810, St. James’ Church, West Teignmouth, Devon, England
, d. Yes, date unknown Married - Since I think Sophia was living as a Thomas in 1841, with her nephew George, son of her sister Sarah, I show her partnered to George Thomas. A marriage between them was not allowed, as it would have been within the prohibited degrees, but when a woman died leaving children looking after what more natural that a sister might move in to look after them? This often led to marriages, but if the priest or Parish Clerk realised the situation they are unlikely to have allowed it, which may be why there seems to be no marriage of George senior to Sophia.
If they had managed to marry before a change in the law in 1835, then the marriage would have been treated as legal, if not challenged when both were living; from the change in law in 1835 all such marriages contracted before that date were legalized, but all contracted after were to be invalid!
I have yet to discover what became of Sophia, or of either George, her partner or nephew, after 1841.

The transcribed data show the marriage was recorded as that of Sarah Gothem to George Thomas
"George Thomas of the Parish
of Plymouth - Mariner
and Sarah Gothen of this Parish
Spinster
were married in thie Church by Licencewith Consent of
Both of age this twenty third Day of
August in the Year One thousand eight hundred and twenty nine
By me Edmund Duncan Rhules - Curate
This Marriage was solemnized between us George Thomas, Sarah Gothem
In the Presence of Mary Heath, John Brien, G Daimond
No. 264."
Mary Heath was probably Sarah's mother, though could have been her (half) sister, G Daimond was probably the Parish Clerk as he witnessed most marriages in West Teignmouth at this time, I don't know who John Brien was.
The date seems to be before that of the marriage licence, which clearly it can't have been, but from its position in the register I think the date of the licence is wrong - see notes attached to that event.
Marriage License 21 Sep 1829 - Shows that Geo. Thomas of Plymouth, mariner obtained a Licence for a marriage in the Church of W Teignmouth between him and Sarah Gothen, Spinster, making Oath that Sarah had her usual place of abode in the said Parish [West Teignmouth] for at least the past 15 days.
Clearly the date of marriage licence or marriage as I show them here has to be wrong. I thought the marriage might be meant to be 23 Sept, but looking in the register there are several recorded after it later in August and in September before 23rd, so it would seem that is correct.
The year on the marriage licence is not clear; there is a small circle with a blob of ink below, so it could be 1828 or 1829. While 1828 is a possibility, most did not leave it so long before marrying, so maybe the clerk who filled the form in entered the wrong month.
