Hannah HURRELL
Set As Default Person -
Name Hannah HURRELL Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Baptised 21 Mar 1830 St. James’ Church, West Teignmouth, Devon, England
[1] Gender Female Residence 1841 The Strand, East Teignmouth, Devon, England
- At the time of the census with her brother William and their half brother Edwin, in the house of mariner George Davis and his wife Mary Ann. Also present were Thomas Heath, like Edwin a boatman, and Elizabeth Heath.
Mary Ann was Hannah's first cousin, daughter of her aunt Mary GOTHAM, as was Elizabeth HEATH and probably Thomas too.
'Anna Horrell' was still with them in 1851.
Occupation 1851 Servant - Hannah was living with her 1st cousins, half sisters Mary Davis (née Gotham) and Elizabeth Paddon (née Heath), daughters of her aunt Mary Heath née Gotham; it is not clear if she was a servant to them or simply living with them and working elsewhere. She was shown as 'cousin', not servant, in the relation to the head of household column so I think it probably doesn't mean servant to them. With the census little more than 3 months before her death, she may not have been working at the time of the census, due to ill-health.
Died 15 Jul 1851 Dawlish Street, East Teignmouth, Devon, England
Cause: Amenorrhæa (2 years), Anæmia - GRO ref: Horrell, Hannah q3 1851 Newton Abbot RD 10 96; GRO online index shows age at death as 20
Details from death registration (GRO register entry)
The informant was Elizabeth Paddon, present at the death, though she lived in Queen Street, rather than in Dawlish Street where Hannah died. Elizabeth was a first cousin of Hannah, daughter of the sister Mary of Hannah's mother, Patienceb. Elizabeth was about 16 years older than Hannah; it looks as though following Patience' death Elizabeth as well as her half-sister Mary Ann had helped to look after their young orphaned cousins.
The cause given is a little surprising, it seems to me more likely the anæmia could have caused both the amenorrhæa and the death, rather than the amenorrhæa contributing to the death.

[2] - When Patience died shortly after having her last child, though after that baby had died, she left two children of her marriage to Joseph, aged 3 and 5, and two more born before she married, aged about 8 and 14. I don't know how long Joseph stayed in Teignmouth, but he was not there by the time of the 1841 census, about 8 years after Patience' death, and the care of her children seems to have fallen to her half-sister Mary Ann and sister Elizabeth Jane.
