Sargeant connected to the Borough of Plymouth
    • On a page in the borough records dated 30 September 1678, listing all sorts of office holders, the final note is of four men sworn as 'Sargea[nts] of this Burrough" followed by "Samuell Gotham was alsoe sworne as Sargeant extraord[inarie] [?warflit]"
(ends of a couple of words guessed, as in [ ] because the corner of the page is missing; last word a guess - I will attempt to see entries for other years where it may be clearer).

This appears to have been his full-time occupation, and not just an extra role, since in 1679 when a bondsman to a marriage by licence he was described as 'lictorem' where a man's occupation was generally recorded. This translates to 'lictor', for which the gives a couple of C17th examples of use which show it meaning a Serjeant.
    Miscellaneous 7 Apr 1679
    Bondsman to marriage
    • Bondsman for the marriage licence for William Willing of South Brent and Honour Windgatt of Deane Prior.
(found through Fursdon index at the DHC, image of allegation seen on FamilySearch)

Since the index does not show Samuel as bondsman for other licences it does not look like he was acting as bondsman to make money, which suggests he knew one or both of the couple, as a friend or relation.
With Samuel's father from Ugborough, a neighbouring parish to South Brent and since I don't know his mother's maiden name or birthplace either William or Honour could well have been a cousin of Samuel's.
