I estimated 1690 based on date of marriage and probable date of baptism of wife; see baptism notes on why this seems likely to be (but may not be) 'my' John Nichoals.
Baptised 5 Dec 1690 St. Nicholas’ and St. Cyriac’s Church, South Pool, Devon, England - There could be others in parishes not on FMP, or in registers or pages which are illegible or no longer exist (such as Sherford), but looking through John 'Nicholls' bapt in Devon in 1660-1700 this is the only one anywhere near Stokenham.
To add weight to this being the right John, there is no sign of him marrying or being buried in South Pool.

Feb 1733/34, South Pool, Devon, England (Age ~ 74 years) Married 18 Jan 1685/86 St. Nicholas’ and St. Cyriac’s Church, South Pool, Devon, England - There were quite a few Huits married in South Pool in the 1680s and 1690s, suggesting the family was established in the parish. However, the PRs only go back to 1664/5 so finding anything earlier will be difficult. The BTs may help.
The same is not true of the Nicholls family. The only entries from the start of the PRs to 1733 are for John and his immediate family (i.e. wife and children). In 1734 a Roger can be found having children.
It looks, therefore, like John might well have moved to South Pool from elsewhere, but I think his name is too common for any realistic possibility of identifying him, should his baptism be in any PRs that do survive.
