William SULLOCK

Name William SULLOCK Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Est 1562 - Since this William seems to have married for the first time in either 1589 or 1593, then the estimate is based on those dates.

- Who were Alice's parents?
In 1606 William son of William junior was baptised and in 1607/8 Alis, whose father was also described as 'William junior'. Since a William Sullock married in Blackawton in 1603 the 'obvious' parents would be this William and his wife. But is this correct?
A William son of William junior has also been baptised in 1594; was the person described then as William junior or a different one? (The William bapt in 1594 was buried 22 Mar 1594/95).
There were no other baptisms of children of a William Sullock(e) described as 'junior' between 1594 and 1606; this long gap might suggest that the two William juniors were different people, but there were other children of a William Sullock with no description; it looks as though the priest may simply have been inconsistent in the details he recorded.
In Blackawton a William Sullock married Katherine Taylor in 1589; a Katharyn was buried in 1592 but she was a widow; the Katherine who married in 1589 was presumably the one buried 27 March 1603, and so the William who married later in 1603 (on 21 Nov to Joan Michelmore) was proabably the one who had been married to Katherine. A William married Judith Pitton in 1593. Judith, shown as wife of William was buried on 4 Nov 1594 and a William, presuambly the same one, married Joan Gamon on 2 Mar 1594/5.
It seems likely that one of the above Williams, i.e. the one who married Katherine then Joan OR the one who married Judith then Joan, was William the younger.
With first known marriages in 1589 and 1593 the dates are too close together to assume the one who married first was the older William.
It would be quite unsafe to assume that the couple who married in 1603 were Alice's parents.
For some of the above I have seen PR entries, for some only index entries. I will check all the PR entries, but I doubt they will clarify the situation.
Looking at the Devon Wills Project index it looks unlikely that a will exists that will do either. There may be marriage licence(s) or other documents that will help. I will look, but it is quite likely that nothing will be found to provide sufficient evidence.
