Both were under age; I guess there was opposition from one or both sets of parents. Both were still  underage when they married, and the ages were not 'adjusted' to disguise this, so the parents must have given permission then. What may or may not be significant is that Lawrence's father died the same quarter that Eric was born; maybe it was he who was opposed to the marriage.
