  • Name John ANDREWS
    Relationshipwith Teresa Ann GOATHAM
Born Between 1791 and 1801  Milstead, Kent, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    • Birthplace shown as Milstead in the 1851 and 1881 censuses, unknown in 1861, Bapchild according to the 1871 census. While the villages of Bapchild and Milstead are about 4 miles apart, they share a boundary and John may have lived very close to this.
When he was born is also unclear. His age in 1841, supposedly rounded down to the nearest 5, was given as 40, suggesting born 1796-1801. In 1851. though, he was shown as 54 (I think - not completely clear) i.e. suggesting born 1896-7, in 1861 as 61, suggesting born 1799-1800, in 1871 as 79, i.e. born 1791-2 and in 1881 as 86 i.e. born 1794-5.
Unfortunately this lack of clarity about place and date means there are several candidates to be this John.
A John was baptised in Milstead in 1794, illegitimate son of Sarah, another was baptised in Milstead in 1796, son of Thomas and Elizabeth.
There is no obvious match with the names chosen by John and his wife for their children with the children of either of the couples who might have been his parents, nor did he name a daughter Sarah, so naming patterns do not help establish which is likely to be him.
When John married his wife's parents were the witnesses so there is no help there. Working out what happened to the other John Andrews might suggest which they were and hence which remains to be this John, but I have no plans to attempt this at present (if anyone has evidence I would be pleased to hear).

    • There are only 2 refs in the whole of Kent which fit to be this John
I think it was probably the following, which John was buried at Hackington, like this John's wife was, and the burial register shows John as of Chartham, and the last known address of this John was in Chartham Hatch
      GRO ref: Andrews, John q1 1887 aged 93 Bridge RD 2a 483

John was in Sturry (i.e. in Blean RD) at the time of the 1881 census, though shown as a visitor and the other death of a John of the right age was in Blean RD:
      GRO ref: Andrews, John q4 1884 aged 87 Blean RD 2a 502
However, checking the FMP index entries for burials in Sturry in 1884 does not find a John Andrews
