    • Jesse, George's father, was summoned to the Cricklade Petty Sessions of 30th July, 1881. There were seven other 'School Prosecutions' took place at the same Sessions, of which six were fined and one adjourned. It was Jesse's wife, Diana, who appeared and gave evidence and this was the only case accepted: 'Edward George' was not fit enough to walk to the school 2½ miles away but was attending a dame's school in Purton. She was told to [continue to] send her children to the dame's school until they were stronger in health:
"Jesse Titcombe, laborer, of Purton Stoke, was sum-
moned by the same authority to show cause why his son
Edward George should not be sent regularly to school.
      - This case was adjourned from the May and June ses-
sions to give the defendant an opportunity to obtain a
certificate from a medical man, stating the inability of
the child's attending school. - Defendant's wife ap-
peared and handed in a certificate from Dr. Langley,
proving that the child was not ina fit and proper state
to walk so far to school - two and a half miles. She
stated that the lad went to a dame's school at Purton
Stoke. - The Bench were satisfied with the certificate,
and told the mother to send her children to the dame's
school until they were stronger in health."
