Isaac Henry ("Frank") HADLOW

Set As Default Person -
Name Isaac Henry ("Frank") HADLOW Nickname Frank Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born 18 Jan 1875 Boughton under Blean, Kent, England
- GRO ref: HADLOW, Isaac Henry q1 1875 Faversham RD 2a 755
Actual date from the 1939 register
Gender Male Occupation From 1891 to 1911 Coachman - At the time of the 1891 census Frank was a coachman groom employer working from home - a 17 yr old groom boarding with the family)
Recorded simply as a coachman at the time of his marriage, and as a coachman (domestic) in the 1911 census.
Occupation Bef 1915 Chaffeur - Frank's WW1 papers show that before the war he was a chaffeur. It would appear that as cars became more common, replacing horse drawn vehicles, he had changed from driving a coach to driving a car.
Military Service From 15 Nov 1915 Motor Driver in Royal Army Service Corps - Aged 40 when he joined up, older than most but Frank was able to use his ability to drive cars, a skill few would already have had at that time, in serving his country.
Four months after joining up Frank embarked SS "Invicta" at Folkestone, disembarking later the same day, 18 March 1916 at Boulogne.
However, after serving as a motor driver for the British Expeditionary Force for 18 months, on 8 September 1917 Frank was knocked down and run over by a lorry, his foot being smashed and left in a weak conditions. A nervous debility was also consequent upon the accident, and Frank returned to Folkstone on 18 September 1917.
He then spent 17 days at the 3rd London General Hospital, Camberwell, from 17 September to 4 October, and then 80 days at 16 The Avenue, Brondesbury, listed as a hospital. Frank only mentioned being treated at the 3rd London General, I guess 16 The Avenue was a temporary wartime convalescent hospital.
The accident did not end his time in the army, though, and he served in Edinburgh from 13 March 1918, being appointed to the paid rank of acting sergeant with effect from 29 June 1918, the date on which he assumed duties appropriate to that rank.
He was discharged on 4 March 1919, being sent to Woolwich Dockyard, not too far from his home.
Also known as Frank Henry HADLOW Occupation 1939 The Bull Inn, Bisham, Berkshire, England
Publican - Living at the Bull with Isaac were his wife, daughter in law Jessie and one closed entry (Possibly a grandchild, though it could be his son Graham, the husband of Jessie, whose entry should be open but perhaps has an error or has been mis-transcribed. However, it could be that Graham was away, if so probably due to the war, and that a young person, possibly an employee at the pub, was resident)

Patriarch & Matriarch
John HADLOW, b. Abt 1816, Hernhill, Kent, England

Notes - Isaac Henry = names on marr cert., Frank = name on 1901 census (am sure have right family because of Mabel Goatham with them) (another Isaac - Isaac C - b 1860 Cooling, also moved to London; no obvious connection: I have traced both back 2 generations).
His WW1 papers give his name as Frank Henry Hadlow. As they include not just the Christian names of his wife but also the date of their marriage, and the names and dates of birth of their sons I am sure that 'Frank Henry' is 'Isaac Henry'.
