Name Charles BEATON Relationship with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Abt 1815 South Mundham, Pagham, Sussex, England - Birthplace given as Pagham (1861, 1881 censuses), South Mundham (1871) - these are not contradictory as South Mundham is in Pagham Parish. His baptism PR entry shows the family's abode at the time as South Mundham, so it is probably where Charles was born, especially as they were also living there when his older sister was born.
Baptised 14 Oct 1815 St. Thomas à Becket Church, Pagham, Sussex, England - From PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 15 Apr 2023)
"[1815] Octr 14th No.95. Charles son of John & Hannah Bacon, abode: South Mundham, father's occupation: Labourer, ceremony performed by W Marler Vicar"
Gender Male Residence From 1840 to 1841 West Wittering, Sussex, England - Shown as resident in West Wittering at the time of his marriage.
In 1841 with his wife, Charles was living with his parents-in-law.
Occupation From 1841 to 1861 Ag Labourer - Recorded as a labourer at time of his marriage.
An ag lab according to the 1841,1851 and 1861 censuses
Residence 1843 Nyetimber, Pagham, Sussex, England - At the time his daughter Mary was baptised
Residence 1851 North Bersted, South Bersted, Sussex, England - Living in parish of South Bersted, village of North Bersted at the time of the census - no further details to addr.
Residence 1856 Colworth, Sussex, England - At the time his son Edward was baptised.
Residence 1858 Portfield, Oving, Sussex, England - At the time his son Frederick was baptised.
Residence From 1860 Langstone Farm House, Langstone, Havant, Hampshire, England - The family must have moved from Sussex to Hampshire (Langstone, Havant) between the burial of son Frederic early in 1859 and the birth of Alice in early June 1860. Her birth registration shows they were in Langstone, but does not specify a house or road, so it may or may not have been the farm house.
At the time of the 1861 census Charles was recorded as with his wife Caroline and younger children (Caroline, Ann, Eli Charles, Edward, Alice)
Occupation 1864 Bailiff - According to his daughter's marriage certificate.
I was also told by my great Aunt Ivy that he was a bailiff, but since she had the marriage certificate she may have gleaned the information from there; it cannot be taken as corroboration.
Residence 1871 7, Sommers Town, Havant, Hampshire, England - In 1871 Charles was still married (rather than widower) but his wife was not present at the time of the census, as she was in a lunatic asylym. With his were his youngest children, Edward and Alice, "niece" Sarah A Beacon, aged 5, and his mother-in-law Ann Withers.
His "niece" appears to be his illegitimate granddaughter, daughter of his daughter Caroline who was lodging in Chichester.
Occupation 1871 Carter - From the census
Residence 1881 New Lane, Havant, Hampshire, England - With his wife Caroline and daughter Alice
Occupation 1881 Labourer - From the census

The 1851 census shows Charles as born London but this is the only place to give this as a birthplace so seems to be a mistake.
