Name Annie Maria CORNWELL Relationship with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Jun Q 1867 Kennington, Surrey, England - 1891 census shows born Middlesex, and suggests born about 1865. However, Annie is shown as aged 4 in the 1871 census, and 14 in 1881, suggesting born 1866 or 7; also she is shown as born Lambeth (1871), Kennington (1881) and Old Kent Road (1901), all close to each other and all Surrey, so I think Middlesex in 1891 was an error. The 1911 census also has an error, showing New Brompton in Kent. This is a long way from the other locations, and might suggest I could be looking at the wrong Annie, except that Annie was living in Gillingham, of which New Brompton was a part, by the age of 4, and the 1881 census shows the family specifically in New Brompton. It is easy to see how a mistake could be made, especially as Annie was then a housekeeper and the form was filled in by the head of household. Maybe he was relying on what he believed from conversations with Annie, in which she may have spoken of her early childhood in New Brompton, rather than asking her.
GRO ref: Cornwell, Annie Maria q2 1867 Lambeth RD 1d 374; GRO online index shows mother's maiden name as Turton
I'm sure this must be the right birth, due to the mother's maiden name; there is only one marriage of a Cornwell to a Turton, and the names fit those of the parents in the census entries I have identified as Annie's family, based on the information about her father on her marriage certificate.
Gender Female Residence 1921 30, Canterbury Street, Gillingham, Kent, England - Despite only having officially married her partner of over 20 years a few months before the census, Annie was one of three 'visitors' in the home of John Pillip Dial, although shown as house keeper, working for J. Dial, working at 30, Canterbury Street, Gillingham, so it seems it was where she was living.
The other two, a couple, do seem to be genuinely visitors, since the husband's place of work was in Reading (for Huntley and Palmers). It seems probable they were there to visit Annie rather than John Dial, since they were Annie's sister Harriet and Harriet's husband.

Separated Between Apr 1891 and 1895 - Arthur and Annie were together, with their daughter, at the time of the 1891 census (night of 5th / 6th April), but in September Arthur put a notice in the Chatham News, telling tradesmen he would no longer be answerable for any debts contracted by his wife, suggesting she may have left him by then:
"Notice to Tradesmen,
I hereby give notice that I will not be
answerable for any Debts contracted by my
Wife, Annie Goatham, after this date.
Arthur Goatham."
(from The Chatham and Rochester News of 19 Sep 1891, p.4, col. 7)

Family 2 Harry MacLaughlin RICKETTS, b. Abt 1866, Camberley, Surrey, England , d. Sep Q 1927, Alton Reg Dist, Hampshire, England (Age ~ 61 years) Living as if married From 1895 - Although not together on census night in 1901 or 1911, both were shown as married, living near each other, Annie with the surname Ricketts, and in 1911 the information only requested for married women showed that Annie was claiming to be in a marriage which had completed 16 years. Although only requested for married women, the length of marriage has also been entered for Harry, and is given as 15 years. Hence I am guessing that Harry and Annie had been living as man and wife since about 1895.
The 1911 census also showed there had been one child of this marriage who had died (in Annie's entry only). I cannot find a child whose birth was registered as a Ricketts with a mother's maiden name of Cornwell, and haven't found the birth of child registered as a Goatham who could be the offsping of this couple.
Married Mar Q 1921 Brentford Reg Dist, Middlesex, England - GRO ref: Goatham, Ann M to Ricketts, Harry M q1 1921 Brentford RD 3a 388
I suspect Harry and Annie married in Brentford RD, either when visiting Annie's daughter or on a trip there especially to get married, because they had been living for many years as husband and wife and didn't want friends and neighbours in Hampshire finding out that they hadn't actually been married.
The 1911 census suggests they had had one child together who had died, but I have not discovered who they were. (It is possible the reference is to a child of Annies, rather than them as a couple, although in that case I would have expected that she would also be shown as having a living child, which she is not)

- 1891 census shows born Middlesex, and suggests born about 1865.
