Reginald MANKTELOW
Set As Default Person -
Name Reginald MANKTELOW Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born 20 Dec 1924 Swanton Court, Bredgar, Kent, England
- Details from birth certificate (copy amongst divorce proceedings for his mother).
GRO ref: Manktelow, Reginald q1 1925 mother's maiden name: Page, Milton RD 2a 1593
No father named on birth certificate; it seems probable that Amos was the father, being the co-respondent in Ellen's divorce. At the time Reginald's birth was registered Ellen was still married to Herbert Manktelow, although according to the petition for divorce he subsequently brought was already living with Amos Goatham. The birth was registered by Harriett Page, Ellen's mother who presumably understood Herbert not to be the father.
In the divorce petition it is stated
"... and there has been no issue of the said marriage save and except that on or about the 20th. December 1924 the Respondent was delivered of a male child named Reginald Manktelow the paternity of which is in issue."
A copy of Reginald's birth certificate is filed with the divorce papers, but they give no more information about the dispute. Given that Ellen presumably told her mother that Reginald was not Herbert's child, it may be that Herbert was claiming him as his. Herbert did claim Amos and Ellen were cohabiting from August 1924, clearly too late for Reginald to be Amos's if that was the start of the relationship, but of course it need not have been.
Clearly, it is possible that Reginald's father was neither Amos nor Herbert.
Registered at birth as Reginal Manktelow, he (and his mother) were still using the surname Manktelow at the time of the 1939 register, but changes were made to Page for both of them, Reginald in 1948, Ellen in 1964.

(although 1939 is the earliest I know of him living at the farm, he quite likely lived there for most if not all of his life)

Other Partners: Herbert George MANKTELOW m. 17 Dec 1923Married Aug 1924 - The Petition of Divorce that Herbert Manktelow brought said that Ellen had been cohabiting with Amos from August 1924 to the date of the petition (30 Nov 1927) at Swanton Court Farm in Bredgar. (Reginald was in India with the army at this time). This was a farm farmed by Ellen's father at some stage (according to brief obit in the Dover Express when he died); presumably he was farming there then. The 1921 census shows it was a large farm house - 14 rooms, so space for boarders. Had Amos left his family or were the family boarding there?
I don't know how long Amos continued living with Ellen. Amos died shortly before the 1939 registration so that won't show if they were still together, but he appears to have been living with his wife when he died: his death registration shows him as 'of Howt Green' and this was where she was living at the time of the 1939 register; electoral rolls may give a clue, although if the whole family were in Swanton Court Farmhouse it will not be clear when any relationship ended.
At the time of the registration in 1939 Ellen and her son Reginald were with her parents, shown with the name Manktelow though both as later using Page (Ellen's maiden name).
