James MCGEORGE
Set As Default Person -
Name James MCGEORGE Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Abt Jan 1851 Woolwich, Kent, England
- Despite being shown as aged 56 in the 1911 census and only 40 in the 1901 census. he seems to have been older than both suggest. The 1921 census shows him as aged 70 years and 6 months and his age as recorded when he joined the Royal Artillery both suggest c. Dec 1850 / Jan 1851.
Shown as James, aged 3 months in the 1851 census (suggesting born Dec 1850 or Jan 1851), but the birth registration which otherwise matches gives his name as John (possibly an error when the GRO copy was made)
GRO ref: McGeorge, John q1 1851 Greenwich RD 5 286; GRO online index shows mother's maiden name as Daniel
Gender Male Residence 1901 43, Medway Road, Gillingham, Kent, England
- Boarding with a Goatham family - George and Rose, a daughter of theirs and 2 grandchildren, and one other boarder.
The Goatham daughter was Henrietta, who was James 'housekeeper' at the time of the 1911 and 1921 censuses.

, d. 7 Feb 1938, County Hospital, 42, Magpie Hall Road, Chatham, Kent, England
(Age ~ 72 years)
Other Partners: William Richard BELL m. Abt 1886; Ernest Joseph Henri PHELIPPAULT m. Mar Q 1930Married? Not married or evidence to suggest they didn't marry Notes - I'm not sure that there was a relationship between James and Henrietta, other than that she was his housekeeper, but it seems likely.
When Henrietta's son married in 1919 he did so in Scotland where the marriage registration forms have a space for mother's name and surname. Her name was given as 'Henrietta Goatham was McGeorge'. Did William give his mother's name like this because she was living as though Mrs McGeorge, but being himself a Goatham he switched the current and 'was' names around to hide his illegitimacy? Or did the name simply occur to him because he knew his mother's employer was a James McGeorge?
Further evidence of a relationship is that in the same house as James McGeorge and Henrietta at the the time of the 1911 census was Henry Pearce, who Henrietta was later to marry. Surely it cannot have been chance that it was only after James' death, and just a few months after, that Henrietta and 'Henry' married, after knowing each other for at least 19 years. The most likely explanation for them not marrying earlier is surely that there was a relationship between Henrietta and James.
