I've known for a long time I had a Sweetland ancestor who married in Slapton. Before looking for her origins I had become aware of another Sweetland ancestor further east in Devon, in Ideford, and had also spotted some in Blackawton when searching for ancestors there.
I imagined it was quite a common name.
I was therefore surprised when the PR images went online on FMP to see how few there were in the South Hams. It seemed pretty clear a William Sweetland had arrived in Blackawton from some place unknown to marry in 1654. Three sons would seem a good start to keeping the name going in the area, but one disappears from the PRs, one had 2 marriages but no children from either, and although the 3rd, my ancestor William had 3 children of whom 2 married, his only son died in infancy.
Thus after 1745, less than a hundred years after the first, we find the last Sweetland entry in the Blackawton PRs. This is the only entry which is a puzzle: it is the burial of maiden woman Grace, but I have found no baptism for a Grace. I suspect she was a daughter of one of the people on this tree, though.
