    • A Stephen Knowling, likely to be this one, though it could be his father, signed a petition by those of Dartmouth and nearby 'occupied in the Newfoundland fisheries', complain that their trade is likely to be destroyed in consequence of the number of Turkish pirates from Algiers and Sallee, the rebellion in Ireland, and the dread entertained of a popish rising and asking the government to do something about it.

      A John, likely to be Stephen's brother, also signed.

    • It seems that William was in debt, Stephen yielded to pleading to help William out - and then William was dishonest about what had been agreed.
      However, I have only found the bill of complaint, not a reply, so we don't know William's view of things.
      Nor (as yet) have I looked for any decrees or orders.

      Maybe born elsewhere before Stephen and his wife moved to Dartmouth St Saviours? Could simply be another Dartmouth parish; St Clement's and St Petrox' PRs don't survive from this time.
