    • This seems the most likely burial based on date and place, but there is no additional info in the burial register to add weight to this.
      There was also a Mary Patey buried in Stokenham on 23 Feb 1780.
      Alternatively, Mary and James could have moved to another parish and been buried there.

      The Mary buried in Stokenham in 1787 was shown as a pauper. This was not uncommon; of the 32 people buried in Stokenham in 1787 no less than 11 were paupers. Of course this does not mean that a third of the population were. Those who were sick and/or elderly were both more likely to be paupers and more likely to die.
