    Sailor
    • As well as being recorded as a sailor in the 1881 census, the half yearly account of voyages on the 'Charlie', which made 12 voyages from the port of Faversham to London with bricks, shows that Charles was briefly employed as Mate, with just one other member of the crew, the owner and master Joseph Street of Sittingbourne, aged about 47. It would seem Charles didn't like the work, as he joined on 15 April, following the discharge of the previous Mate (who seems to have been on the vessel since the start of the year) but left just 9 days later.
    Occupation From 1890 to 1910
    Fisherman
    • From his marriage PR entry, the 1891 census, and when he witnessed his father's will in 1892. Also the occupation recorded on his death certificate.

By 1901 there is just one entry for Billett Cottage. Charles and his wife Clara and their 4 children were all shown as living with Clara's step-father, mother, brothers Thomas and Reginald and Thomas's wife.

    Occupation Hotel Proprietor
    • He had been a hotel proprietor according to the marriage PR entry for his daughter Annie; I think this might be stretching the truth - that rooms had been available in his pub.

    Notes
    • At the time of the 1881 census Charles was "third hand OS" on the vessel "Isabella" at Ramsgate.
Living in London Rd, Milton 1891 (19 - Billett Cottage); with parents in law & bro-in-law & his wife.
With his own family (1901) - Billett Cott.

The 1911 census shows Charles and Clara had had 4 children, 3 still alive in 1911. It also shows the names and ages of 4 children! These include George Gotha, who I thought was the one who died in 1902 - was it believed this list should show all? Or was Annie Maria not a "child of the marriage"? Her birth was reg as a Goatham, but in the same quarter as her "parents" marriage!

Although the marriage certificate shows both Henry and Harriet as resident in Chatham, Harriet had lived with her family in Flushing Street in Milton, where her mother and siblings were still living in 1861, although by then Harriet had moved to live where she was working, in Chatham. Less than 3 weeks before the wedding Henry was living with a sister and her family in Milton. Perhaps he described himself as living in Chatham to save the need to arrange for banns to be read in Milton.
While Harriet's residence in the parish would have enabled them legally to marry in Chatham, many marriages seemed to take place there where neither of the couple was resident. The large size of the parish and the number of transitory residents due to the dockyard probably made it effectively impossible to check that at least one of a couple was resident (as required by the 1753 Hardwicke Act)
