    Dealer - bought stolen copper
    • One problem for dealers must have been knowing whether goods they were buying had been honestly acquired by the seller.
Edwin gave evidence regarding a copper he had bought which was then alleged to be stolen:
"Alleged theft of a copper at Badlesmere.
At the Faversham County Police Court on Tuesday, before Captain C. E. Cheetham, Albert Francis Maltwood, of Tanners Street, was charged with stealing a copper copper, value 50s., the property of Arthur Thomas Hedgecock, at Badlesmere, on April 15th.
Prosecutor, who lives at Woods Court Farm, stated that the copper produced was his property. He last saw it in a field on the farm on Thursday morning last. It was a few yards from the road. It was reported missing on Saturday morning. It had been in the same position in the field for 2½ years.
Edward Charles Goatham, a dealer, of 40, Westgate Road, stated that he had known prisoner for eight or nine months since he first came to Faversham. Between 6 and 6.30 on the 15th inst he met prisoner driving in West Street. Noticing the copper in his cart he said "Lucky Albert." Prisoner asked if he would buy it. He said "How much," and prisoner replied "Sixpence a pound." Witness told prisoner to take the copper to his stables. The following morning he weighed in in the presence of prisoner and it weighed 40lbs. He paid prisoner a sovereign. He did not ask prisoner how he obtained the copper as he knew he was a general dealer.
In reply to prisoner, witness said he told him that it cost him 11s.
Sergt. Barham stated that prisoner told him he bought the copper from an old man with a truck for 11s. on the Chilham Road about three miles from where the copper was stolen. Witness had made enquiries, but was unable to find that any old man with a truck had been seen in the district.
The Magistrate remanded prisoner to the Petty Sessions on May 6th, but allowed him out on bail."

    Notes
    • In 1925 a Mr E C Goatham is shown as having sent a floral tribute to the funeral of Edward Penfold. While Edward was brother-in-law of Edwin's nephew George, the list of mourners at Edward's funeral includes a Mr and Mrs J Beaney (uncle and aunt) and a Mr J Beaney (cousin). Beaney was Edwin's wife's maiden name, so I suspect Edwin was also related to Edward by marriage, if a little more distantly than his nephew.
