    • Mr John Adams, Richard bartlett and William Bartlett were assessed together for £5 in one fifty. Whilst I think the last 2 must be this Richard and his son William, and I think John Adams was the Vicar of Blackawton, husband of Richard's sister-in-law Jane Wotton.

    • English his wife was described as "Wife of Richard" and not "Widow" in the Parish Register entry for her burial, so he was probably still alive.
      There was a Richard Bartlett buried in Blackawton in 1762 but this Richard would then have been aged at least about 90, so it's possible but more likely his son.
    Notes 
    • (Research):I suspect that Richard was fairly closely related to the William Bartlett who married his Richard's wife's sister Susanna.
      I can find a fair bit relating to William's family - I will follow up the references and see if they lead to any information about Richard.

      Bartletts of Marldon - a small tree, not including any close relations to those on this tree was in vol. 1 of Visitation of England and Wales, ed. Howard, Joseph Jackson, LL.D. and Crisp, Frederick Arthur (1893).
      In what appears to be a supplementary publication to the above, 'Notes to the Visitation of England and Wales Notes, Vol. 2' by the same authors (n.b. the 'Notes to the' differentiates this from a completely different volume, Visitation of England and Wales, vol. 2, as can be seen from this book which lists what each covers) a fuller tree is included, including Richard's wife's sister Susanna and her husband and child. See the preview.
      Much of the Bartletts of Marldon article and tree is available in a preview - but not all, and this volume does not appear to be in the archive.org website, nor in SOG library, nor other places I have looked so far. Nor is the reprint still available for purchase, and the only secondhand copy is well over £100! So it might be sometime before I manage to see the whole article.
      The preview pages, though, do suggest which wills would be of most interest, and checking the Devon wills project luckily abstracts exist for most of these.

      Richard and English married in 1692; at this time there was no requirement to show whether a marriage was by banns or licence, and so this information is rarely found in the PRs. I would guess their marriage is likely to have been by licence, so looking for this would be worthwhile, it may well give extra information on Richard's background - where he was from and possibly his father's name and occupation.
