    • Ellen travelled with her son George to South Africa in 1902, as steerage passengers on board the 'Briton', whose master was J W Creaghe.

      Shown as Mrs Vogw[e/i?]ll, aged 27 and Mast. G. aged 3, I am sure it must be Ellen and George as Ellen's next child was born in South Africa the following year.

      I expect her husband George had travelled ahead and she and their son were going to join him. Possibly the plan was to emigrate permanently; if so it seems that for some reason it didn't suit them, because by 1905 when their third son was born they were back in Gunnislake.

      The 1911 census shows that George and Ellen had had 4 children, of whom one had died. GIven that the youngest was only aged 1 and Ellen aged 37 there may have been more born after this.
