Set As Default Person -
Name William Jackman Gale PALMER Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Abt 1818 - Age given as 11 when he was apprenticed in 1829
Baptised 22 Nov 1818 St. Peter’s Church, Lamerton, Devon, England
Gender Male Apprenticeship From 9 Sep 1829 to 1839 Peter Tavy, Devon, England
Parish Apprentice - Became a Parish Apprentice in 1829, at the age of 11. His residence at the time was shown as Lamerton, and his mother as Prudence (no surname given).
William was apprenticed to James Gill, a yeoman of Peter Tavy, with the apprenticeship to last until William reached the age of 21.
(In showing the apprenticeship as lasting until 1839 I am guessing that William didn't die or run away etc.)
Died Yes, date unknown
Half-siblings3 half sisters (family of Oliver PALMER and Prudence JUSTHAM)
Half-siblings2 half brothers and 2 half sisters (family of William SMALE and Prudence JUSTHAM) Patriarch & Matriarch
Notes - (Research):Who was William's father? Illegitimate children were often given the surname of their father as a middle name - but William had 2 such names. I guess it is possible that Prudence didn't know whether the father was a man with the surname Gale or one named Jackman, but I think it unlikely; it seems to me more probable that his father had been given Jackman as a Christian name - and was probably either called Jackman Gale or William Jackman Gale. (Families with both surnames were to be found in Lamerton at this time).
A quick look at the PWDRO catalogue and it would appear that unfortunately neither bastardy bonds nor overseers accounts for Lamerton parish survive for this period.
A tree on Ancestry shows his father as Edward Jackman GALE; Edward had a brother William Jackman GALE. I'm not sure what the evidence was that Edward was the father.
