    Notes
    • Her age was accurately recorded in the 1851 census (39), and she had only lost one year by 1861 (48) but she only aged 6 years in the next 10 (54 in the 1871 census) so it is not suprising she only aged another 5 years by the time of her death 7 years after that!
'Grace Poate', widow and a birthplace of Buckland, together with the absence of a burial or re-marriage stronly point to the 1871 census entry being her - and the address being the road where she had been living with her family 10 years before. There is no subsequent burial of a Grace / Sophia Pote (etc.) but the marriage shown here, and the burial of a this Sophia Grace Westlake. There is no entry for a John and Grace Westlake in the 1881 census. There was, though, a 65 year old widower John Westlake living in Shaugh. A clay labourer; the clay digging parts of Shaugh parish are only a couple of miles from Elfordleigh, near which I think Grace's mother was living when she died, maybe that was how Grace knew John.
