Baptised 30 Nov 1851 St. Budeaux’s Church, St. Budeaux, Devon, England
- From PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 13 Sep 2012):
Gender Male Education 1861 College School, Wellington Terrace, Bishops Hull, Somerset, England
Scholar Occupation From 1871 to 1881 Budshead Farm, St. Budeaux, Devon, England
Farm Bailiff - In the 1871 census Richard appears as Farm Bailiff at Buttshead Barton, with the next entry being for Buttshead Farm where William Tozer was farmer of 24 acres. After that is Buttshead Mill, where the King family were millers.
In 1881 the Tozers and the Kings were all shown as separate households at Buttshead Mill, with Richard Spurrell now shown at Buttshead Farm. William Tozer was still shown as a farmer of 24 acres. I suspect noone had moved but the buildings were simply being referred to differently.
Although both censuses show Buttshead, the usual spelling appears to be Budshead. It seems there had once been an impressive Manor House at Budshead, but by the C19th parts were in ruins and parts adapted to a farmhouse, where Richard would have been living. A picture from some years before Richard's time but how it may have looked can be seen here, along with some of the history of the place. It is a listed building, although little now remains; outlines of buildings can be seen zooming in on Google map (satellite view).
There may have been some unusal plants surrounding the farm, as when it was in the possession of the Trelawny family Sir Harry Trelawny specialised in ornamental gardens. Sir Harry was the nephew of, and his wife Laetitia the daughter of, Bishop Trelawny made famous by the eccentric Parson Hawker in the Song of the Western Men. (The Bishop famous? - I'm not quite sure how famous, he seems famous to me because we learnt the song when I was at junior school!)
Budshead Mill, although the adjacent census entry, was about three quarters of a miles to the west - there simply weren't any other dwellings in the vicinity. (Some information and pictures of the Mill, now demolished can be found here, along with some other history of St. Budeaux, as well as here).
Died 8 May 1922 - Date from gravestone as recorded on PWDRO website
