Set As Default Person -
Name William ANDREW Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Baptised 5 Jul 1812 St. Peter’s Church, Meavy, Devon, England
Born Abt 1813 Meavy, Devon, England
- From the 1891 census where shown as aged 77
Gender Male Miscellaneous From 1890 to 1892 Sheepstor, Devon, England
Fiddler - provided old tunes to Sabine Baring-Gould - This was the only elderly William Andrew(s) living in Sheepstor at the time of the 1891 census, i.e. the only one who I think could have been the William Andrew(s) who was visted by Sabine Baring-Gould in 1890 and from whom Sabine Baring-Gould and his collaborator Frederick Bussell collected old tunes in 1892.
An account of the encounter between William and Baring-Gould can be found on this page, which also has a link to the score for perhaps the best known of William Andrew's tunes, "Adam the Poacher".
An excerpt from "Adam the Poacher" can be heard here (the second tune).
There is more information, including about a book of William's tunes, on the Folkopedia website.
