His death was reported in the Sherborne Mercury of 27 Oct 1849:
"Ashburton. - Sudden Death. - Mr. J. W. Trant, of Devonport, the contractor for building the new market, arrived here in the morning of Wednesday week, in order to commence the work. He went to the residence of Mr. W. R. Whiteway, and while there, was seized with apoplexy, and died about 5 o'clock in the evening."

[ Rector's name a guess - looks more like W JM Ausr - but I know the St Aubyn family were connected with the parish, including as clergy]
There were 6 other burials in the parish the same day, and more the day before and the following day.Of those the same day only one person was older, aged 57, one was of a 23 year old, and 4 were under a year (2 days to 7 months). Stoke Damerel was not a healthy place to live.
