Gender Male Census 5 Apr 1891 Fern House, High Street, Garlinge, Margate, Kent, England Occupation From 1901 to 1950 Garlinge, Margate, Kent, England Baker (working by 1901 - "Helps delivering bread") - My grandfather worked first for his father, who had a bakers shop in Garlinge. However my great grandfather went bankrupt, I think during WW1, when my grandparents moved to London and my grandfather continued to work as a baker, but now employed by a company.
He put his baking skills to use at home, being the one in the family to make cakes.
He wanted my Dad to become a jockey - I guess this was his own dream. As a young man delivering bread he would have worked with horses - did he ride them too? And he appears to have had the small wiry build a jockey needed.
Census 31 Mar 1901 Fern House, High Street, Garlinge, Margate, Kent, England Census 2 Apr 1911 Fern House, High Street, Garlinge, Margate, Kent, England Confirmation 25 Oct 1912 St. James’ Church, Westgate on Sea, Kent, England - given book by the Rev Mark Cassidy
St. James' Church, Garlinge and a Vicar, the Revd. Mark Cassidy
External and internal views of the church on a postcard in the "Saxon series"
This is the Church where my paternal grandparents married - and the Vicar who conducted the ceremony. My Dad used to comment that his parents spoke very highly of the Revd. Cassidy and I don't think it was a coincidence that about a year after their wedding my grandfather was confirmed.Occupation 1921 AB Hemmings Baker and Confectioner, 74, High Street, Tooting, London, England Bakery Manager Census 29 Sep 1939 46a, Dornton Road, Balham, London, England Education Margate, Kent, England Holy Trinity School, Margate, Kent - From memory I think my great aunt Ethel said that my grandfather (one of her brothers) attended grammar school. (I do have notes I will check in time) Holy Trinity appears to have been a primary school, though, probably a forerunner of Holy Trinity and St John's Church of England Primary School.
In any case, Auntie Ethel was not born until after my grandfather had left school, so may not have been too reliable about this.
What was Trinity School is now Trinity Court; the Margate Historical Society have a picture of the building
Hospital From 4 Jul 1950 to 16 Jul 1950 Atkinson Morley Hospital, Wimbledon, London, England - His son recorded that his father went into 'A.M. Hos' on 4th July, and records visits to him there to 16 July. He must have been transferred to Charing Cross Hospital between then and 23 July, the date of the next recorded visit.
After one visit my father recorded that he and his Mum had tea in Wimbledon, which makes me think 'A. M. Hos' was short for the 'Atkinson Morley Hospital'. Also, I understand my Grandfather to have died of a brain tumour, and from the 1940s the Atkinson Morley had become a hosptial specialising in neurosurgery, so it would have been appropriate for him to have been treated there. It's specialization in neurosurgery was thanks to the work of Wylie McKissock.
Hospital From 23 Jul 1950 to 20 Aug 1950 Charing Cross Hospital, London, England - From entries in his son's diary. The next visit which specifies the hosptial was not until 7 September, my grandfather must have been transferred sometime between 20 Aug and 7 September. Most visits were on a Sunday; the vist on Thursday 7 September perhaps indicates he had just been moved.
Hospital From 7 Sep 1950 to 24 Nov 1950 Bolingbroke Hospital, Wandsworth, London, England - His son seems to have visited Charing Cross Hospital once a week, but once Charlie was in Bolingbroke visits increased to most Thursdays and Sundays, sometimes Saturday as well. The hospital being closer to home probably enabled this.
The hospital building can be read about on the British listed buildings website.
Hospital From 24 11 1950 to 10 Apr 1951 St. John‘s Hospital, St. John‘s Hill, London, England Died 10 Apr 1951 St. John‘s Hospital, St. John‘s Hill, London, England Cause: Brain tumour - GRO ref: Goatham, Charles R q2 1951 Battersea RD 5c 20 age 65; GRO online index (viewed 6 Nov 2016) shows Christian names as Charles Robert
From my father's diary for 1951 it is clear his father died in hospital; he seems to have stayed in the same hospital from November 1950.
(I haven't bought a copy of my Grandfather's death certificate as I would have thought I should have one somewhere; if I don't come across one with all the family photos etc. I inherited then I will probably buy a copy)
