GRO ref: SMITH, Leslie Spurrell q1 1903 Devonport RD 5b 280; GRO online index shows mother's maiden name as Spurvell  I believe Leslie is a son of Thomas and Florence as this is only Spurrell = Smith marriage in Devon I know of,  Thomas died  probably in 1910 and Leslie is in the dockyard orphanage in 1911, along with a Fred, who fits as the brother not with his mother at the time of the census, which shows she had had 6 children and all were still alive.

  	One of 30 people living in the orphanage at the time of the 1911 census, one of the others being his brother Frederick. The 30 consisted of a Matron, Sewing Mistress, Cook and one housemaid. The other 26 were 16 girls, aged 7 to 15, the 5 14 and 15 year olds all shown as working there, the others at school, and 10 boys, aged 8 to 13, all at school. Presumably there was no work there suitable for boys and they had to leave once they reached the age of 14.
