    • When she was aged just about 8 Elizabeth lost both of her parents, one dying in May, the other in June. Two grandparents remained alive, her maternal grandfather and paternal grandmother, but the former died shortly after, in July the same year. One of her 6 siblings had died the previous year, the others (if still living) were aged from 1 to 15; the remaining sibling closest to her in age, John, was certainly still living, but at some point moved down to Falmouth. I suspect this was an arrangement made by the Buckland overseers - I have seen a reference to them sending boys as apprentices to Falmouth, not quite at the right time for John but it would explain him being there rather than in Buckland. Hopefully Elizabeth, bereft of so many close family in a short time, received the support she needed from her remaining grandmother. It may not be unrelated to her need for closeness that the year after her grandmother died, when Elizabeth was 16, she gave birth to an illegitimate son.

I wonder what happened to the family?

Shows Elizabeth Merrifield, of Lillipeek [Lillipit] - just south of Milton Combe, Milton being where Elizabeth's son died (and may have spent his working life) and where her grandson and possibly most of her family lived.
Crucially, the burial entry shows her as aged 76, i.e. suggesting she was born about 1738-9, and so tying in with the age suggested by her baptism.

    • From DFHS index of PR entries (on FMP, viewed 1 May 2013) and on Dartmoor Press (DP) CD
Merefield, Peter to Jutsham, Elizabeth; DP info shows both were sojourners of the parish rather than longer-term residents.
Not only was Justham (including variants) not a common surname, but the burial of an 'Elizabeth Merrifield' back in Buckland Monachorum ties in with this Elizabeth (she was the right age, and living in the same part of the parish as her son and grandson lived in), adding weight to my suggestion that this was her marriage.

The marriage register for marriages 1754-1812 is not available on FMP. The BT entry can be seen on FamilySearch:
"Peter merefield and Elizabeth Jutsham both sojourners were married in this Church by Banns the 24th day of April 1769"

No children found of this marriage - looking at baptisms in Devon, surname beginning Mer*, as on FMP on 1 May 2013. Also none on DP 'M' CD.
